Infectious disease is on the rise, with deaths from infections predicted to outpace deaths from cancer by 2050. In part, this is because many advanced medical treatments (organ transplants, chemotherapy drugs) result in patient immunosuppression and increased susceptibility to infection. These infections are often caused by microbes that people with healthy immune systems encounter every day and fight off successfully. The overall premise of our research is that if we can better understand how healthy people combat these infections, we can develop technologies and therapies to boost these responses in susceptible patients.
We use the larval zebrafish host model to perform these studies, as this animal model offers an unparalleled combination of tools and techniques, including high-resolution live imaging of infections in intact animals and excellent genetic tools such as CRISPR/Cas genome editing. |
